When Purchasing Manhole Covers, Suppliers Often Suggest Buying a Higher Load Class for Forklift Traffic — Is It Really Necessary?

This is especially true for products like manhole covers. Even among cast iron manhole covers, different load classes come with different prices. So when a supplier says, "If forklifts will be passing over the area, we suggest choosing a cover one class higher," many buyers naturally wonder: Can't a standard class work? Why do we need to go higher? Some may even suspect the supplier is just trying to increase the order value.

That reaction is understandable. If the supplier only says "for forklift traffic, choose one class higher" without explaining why, it is difficult to judge whether the suggestion is well-founded. So why do some projects recommend a higher load class when forklifts are involved? The answer starts with how forklifts actually operate.

Many people first think of forklifts as simply "heavy vehicles." But for a manhole cover, the key factor is not only how heavy the vehicle is. When a vehicle passes over a cover, the load is not a constant, fixed weight. When a forklift starts, brakes, turns, or reverses, the forces change. In addition, forklift tires contact the ground over a limited area, so the actual load may be concentrated on a relatively small zone. If the forklift is carrying a full load, the combined weight of the vehicle and the goods becomes part of the actual service condition.

Another factor that is often overlooked is frequency. On a normal residential road, a vehicle may pass over a manhole cover only a few times a day. In a factory, warehouse, or logistics yard, however, forklifts may pass back and forth many times a day. Occasional passage and daily repeated traffic are not the same consideration.

Therefore, after understanding the site conditions, a supplier may sometimes recommend selecting a higher load class. But note an important precondition: this is a recommendation in certain situations, not a rule that applies whenever a forklift is present.

Every project is different. A forklift may be 2 tons, 3 tons, or larger. Some mainly travel empty, while others frequently carry full loads. Some only occasionally cross a manhole cover, while others pass over it at high frequency every day. Some sites are smooth and forklifts travel in a straight line; others involve frequent turning, braking, and reversing.

The size of the manhole cover itself also matters. The cover size, span, frame design, surrounding structure, and installation location can all affect actual performance. A reasonable selection process is therefore not simply to push the product to a higher class as soon as the word "forklift" appears. Instead, the site conditions should be clarified first, and then a judgment can be made on whether a higher class is needed.

Conversely, if someone only says "if there are forklifts, you need to buy one class higher" without being able to explain the specific reasons, there is no need to place an order in a hurry. After all, engineering procurement is not about buying the most expensive option to feel safe, nor about choosing the lowest price. What matters most is whether the product matches the actual site conditions.

This is especially true for manhole covers. Their performance only becomes clear when they are in actual service. Occasional passage and repeated daily traffic are different. Empty travel and long-term full-load operation are different. Slow straight-line passage and frequent turning and braking are different.

Rather than pursuing a higher class blindly or focusing only on the number on the quotation, it is better to consider the usage scenario, load requirements, product specifications, and budget together. A product selected this way is more likely to perform reliably.

About Us

Yantai Jinjiang Building Materials Co., Ltd. has been providing manhole cover supply services for 15 years. We offer the Jinzhijiang brand of manhole covers, and our related systems hold ISO9001 and EU CE certifications. For different engineering projects, we focus on understanding the usage scenario, specifications, dimensions, and load requirements before proceeding with product selection and supporting quotations.

When purchasing manhole covers, price should not be the only consideration. It is also important to assess whether the supplier clearly explains the product and quotation upfront, whether delivery can be made on time, and whether after-sales support can respond promptly.
